1857: Supreme Court Chief Justice Edward Ryan denied the petition for bar membership to Michigan State because it would mean a "sweeping revolution of social order" and "nature had not tempered women for juridical conflicts." (Norgren, 2010, p. 73)
1870: Washington University, Union College, and University of Michigan permitted female law students.
1873: In Bradwell V. Illinois the United States Supreme Court held that states have the right to statutorily deny women the right to practice law.
1879: Congress passed anti-discrimination legislation; the bill opened the entire federal bar to all qualified women lawyers.
1890: There were more than 200 female attorneys in the United States. They are referred to as the first generation of women lawyers in the United States.
